Grace Community United Methodist Church in Chester recently partnered with community health leaders and Penn Medicine to host a Community Wellness Day that brought critical health resources directly into the city neighborhood.
The event focused on increasing access to preventive care, education, and wellness support for residents who may not regularly have access to these services.
A news release continues:
One of the major highlights of the day was the Penn Medicine Mobile Mammography Unit, which provided free breast cancer screenings for women in the community.
Women from across the area came out to take advantage of this potentially life-saving opportunity. The presence of the mobile unit created visibility, awareness, and important conversations around early detection and women’s health.
In addition to mammography screenings, both men and women received free blood pressure checks and general wellness support throughout the event.
Community members also received education about health insurance benefits, learning that many insurance plans offer more preventative care services and wellness benefits than people often realize. These conversations helped residents better understand how to advocate for their health and maximize the resources already available to them.
One moment during the event reminded everyone why community wellness initiatives matter so deeply. A man attended the event feeling completely normal and decided to have his blood pressure checked.
The screening revealed that his blood pressure was dangerously high. Medical personnel immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation.

With his permission, an ambulance was called and he was transported to a hospital for emergency evaluation. Thankfully, his blood pressure eventually returned to a safer level, but health care professionals shared that the situation could have become deadly had it gone undetected. What began as a routine screening may have ultimately saved his life.
The event also included sound therapy and wellness-centered experiences designed to support emotional and mental well-being, creating a holistic atmosphere focused on caring for the whole person, body, mind, and spirit.
Grace Community UMC continues to demonstrate what it means to be a church actively engaged in the life of the community. Through partnerships like this, the church is helping bridge gaps in healthcare access, raise awareness about preventative care, and provide hope and support to residents in practical and meaningful ways.
