We’ve seen cookies getting an upgrade across supermarkets recently, from the return of M&S’ viral gingerbread and white chocolate Christmas cookies to Tesco’s caramelised biscuit & white chocolate cookies. Now Co-op is following suit with a new and improved ‘Irresistible’ range which landed in stores last week.
This includes the new and improved Irresistible milk chocolate cookies, triple chocolate cookies, shortbread cookies and fruit granola cookies as well as a limited-edition toffee popcorn cookie which will be out at the end of September.
A four-pack of these treats will set you back £2.50, although they’re available for £2 (working out 50p each) until 29 September, so it’s worth making a trip to try them soon. They’re sold in around 2,200 Co-op stores, so you shouldn’t have to travel too far to find them.
As a self-confessed cookie monster, I took it upon myself to sample the new range – it is meant to be irresistible after all. The classic chocolate chip cookies had a generous helping of chocolate which balanced well with the butter cookie dough, whilst the granola had a gorgeous crumbly oat texture studded with juicy sultanas, cranberries and a mix of crunchy seeds. The sugar-dusted shortbread cookies had a satisfyingly melty texture, with a good distribution of chocolate buttons.
However, when it comes to a standout, I must say the triple chocolate cookies stole the show for me – the feel more generous than before, super-loaded with chunks of dark, milk and white Belgian chocolate. The deep chocolatey flavour stood out, along with their richness due to extra butter, brown sugar and golden syrup. Co-op says the updated baking method gives them a soft, chewy middle and lightly crisp edge – just that combination you want for dunking in an afternoon cuppa.
I can’t wait to try the toffee popcorn flavour when they are released next week. Again, Belgian milk chocolate makes an appearance, this time combined with soft salted caramel fudge and chewy pieces of toffee popcorn. It sounds like they strike that perfect balance of sweet-and-salty flavour and chewy texture that I look for in a cookie. It’s available until 9 December, so I’ll be stocking up as soon as possible. These will likely not appear in every store but you can use Co-op’s product finder to track them down.
For anyone who prefers something closer to a classic biscuit tin treat, Co-op has also launched their Irresistible fully coated deep filled custard creams (£2.50). These keep the familiar vanilla-filled biscuit but cover it in a thick layer of smooth milk chocolate. Custard creams seem to be the biscuit of the moment, with M&S also launching a range of products themed around this retro snack from the viral giant outrageously chocolatey milk coated custard cream to the more recent chunked n’ loaded custard cream cookie and their genius custard cream spread. If this is a trend to stay, then I’m up for it!
