It’s that time of year that we await with eager anticipation the launch of Christmas sandwiches across supermarkets, coffee shops and stores across the country. From classic fillings such as turkey and stuffing, pigs in blankets and creamy brie and cranberry to modern twists such as Korean-style Christmas sandos and leftover turkey curry wraps, we’ve seen it all. It’s now, in fact, an annual tradition in the Good Food office to test out as many festive sarnies as we can feasibly lay our hands on, so keep your eyes peeled for this year’s lowdown.
One new launch on our festive radar is Boots’ selection of seasonal sarnies. From 5 October you can choose from plenty of returning favourites, including Brie & Cranberry, Christmas Wrapped, Turkey Feast, Prawn Cocktail sandwiches and our personal favourite, the fully loaded Christmas Club. The latter comes stuffed with chunks of chicken breast, chutney, cheddar and salad leaves. We also like the look of the chicken wrap which offers a spicier alternative along with some veg for crunch.
New to the shelf this year is a gluten-free Chicken, Stuffing & Cranberry sandwich – a first for anyone who usually has to watch the Christmas sandwich fun from the sidelines. This does what it says on the tin but we’d ideally like a bit of salad content to balance the meat and sauce.
The festive sandwiches will be available individually or as part of the Boots Meal Deal from £3.99*, with individual prices ranging from £3.75 to £4.25. The Christmas Club, with its traditional turkey and trimmings energy, remains the priciest option at £4.25, while the new gluten-free sandwich is priced at £3.75.
And if you’re not quite ready for cranberry sauce yet, Boots has also launched a new Premium Meal Deal range for those days when a standard lunch simply won’t do.
The upgraded sandwich line-up includes Steak & Balsamic Chutney, New York Style Deli and Smoked Salmon & Soft Cheese. If you’re more partial to a wrap, then there’s a Greek Style Chicken with Tzatziki & Rocket or Mozzarella with Chargrilled Peppers & Pesto Mayo. This whole range gives more of a treat yourself vibe than grab whatever’s left in the fridge but still designed for a quick lunchtime escape.
Premium sandwiches and wraps cost £5 individually or can be picked up as part of the Premium Meal Deal for £5.20 with a Boots Advantage Card and £5.50 without one. In London, the prices are £6.20 with a card or £6.50 without.
So whether you’re craving a taste of Christmas on the go or in need of a fancy lunch break, Boots’ meal deal range is looking like an enticing option. When it comes to sandwiches, we personally don’t think Christmas can ever come too early.
