Whether you are a parent standing in a half-empty bedroom trying to hold it together, or a high school graduate counting down the days until move-in, the transition to college is one of the most exhilarating and overwhelming experiences a young person can face. New environments, new social circles, new freedoms, and a completely overhauled daily schedule all arrive at once. While most incoming students are prepared to handle a heavier course load and the novelty of doing their own laundry, fewer think about how their wellness habits, skincare routines, and daily rituals will need to evolve right alongside them.
A 2024 U.S. News study found that around 70 percent of students report struggling with their mental health since starting college, and the majority never seek professional support. The good news is that small, consistent habits built early can make a significant difference, and most of them cost nothing at all. To help both parents and students navigate what actually matters, two experts weigh in on the wellness and skincare practices worth prioritizing so that college can be everything it is supposed to be.
The Graduate’s Secret Weapon Is A Daily Ritual
Building a daily wellness ritual does not require an expensive gym membership, a curated morning routine, or anything that looks good on Instagram. It just requires showing up for yourself. Georgiana Laura, wellness coach and founder of SACRA, keeps it simple. “My daily ritual changes all the time. Sometimes I dance, sometimes I breathe, sometimes I meditate, and sometimes I just lie down and play with my dog. But whatever I do, I try to be fully present in that moment,” she explains over email.

The real test of a ritual, she says, is not how it feels on a good day. “The real practice is the day you feel anxious, exhausted, heartbroken or overwhelmed, and you still choose yourself for 10 minutes. I think that’s what rituals really do. They bring you back into your body when your mind is spiraling. The body adapts much faster than the mind does.”
For college graduates stepping into university life, Laura recommends leaning into the simplest practices first such as stretching, journaling, deep breathing, dancing to one song, or sitting quietly without your phone. The goal is presence, not performance. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on these rituals. It doesn’t need to be cool or aesthetic or Instagram-friendly but needs to work for you, so play around and tinker with it.
The Graduate’s Guide To Eating Consciously
The unlimited dining hall is one of college’s great temptations, and it is easy to fall into the habit of eating on autopilot. Laura encourages students to bring a layer of awareness to what they consume and, more importantly, why.

“I think one of the most important conversations around wellness today is not just what we consume, but why we consume it,” she says. “For example, recently I suddenly started craving Coke Zero every day, and instead of immediately criticizing myself, I stopped and asked: am I stressed? Emotionally tired? Looking for stimulation or comfort? Or do I simply enjoy it? That awareness changes everything.”
The insight here is bigger than food choices. Many students are not physically hungry. They are hungry for rest, grounding, comfort, or emotional safety. When you start asking those deeper questions, more conscious and connected eating tends to follow naturally. Hydration, in particular, is easy to neglect in the chaos of a new schedule, and it makes a noticeable difference in energy, focus, and skin health. So if you are an incoming college freshmen, try to opt for healthy food choices when possible and only consume fried foods, late night sweets, and high calorie beverages moderately. If helpful, try to plan your meals ahead of time or keep healthy snacks in your dorm room to avoid reaching for junk food during late night studying sessions.
How To Help Your Graduate Build Confidence
Social media has transformed the college experience in ways that are genuinely hard to navigate. A 2024 Inside Higher Ed survey found that two in five college students say their mental health is impacting their ability to focus, learn, and perform academically, with social media cited as a top contributing factor alongside academic stress and loneliness.
“I think one of the biggest challenges today is overstimulation and constant comparison. Students are exposed to everyone else’s lives, achievements, relationships and appearance all the time, and it becomes very easy to disconnect from yourself,” Laura says.

Her advice is to build in small pauses before reacting. When you feel triggered, insecure or overwhelmed, instead of reacting automatically, pause and ask if you are making choices consciously or driven by pressure and comparison. University life will shift constantly around you. The students who thrive are not the ones who have it all figured out on day one, but the ones who build emotional resilience and who have that inner confidence without feeling like they need to reinvent themselves. Even speaking to your college counselor or a peer group can help you feel grounded as well as spending time in activities or extracurriculars with like-minded individuals.
The Simple Skincare Routine For Every Graduate
Here is something the skincare industry does not always want you to know: a simple routine done every single day will outperform an elaborate one abandoned by week three. A solid foundation requires just three things: a cleanser, a moisturizer, and sunscreen and doesn’t mean you need to break the bank.
Sunscreen is the non-negotiable. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and an estimated one in five Americans will develop it in their lifetime. “Sunscreen is by far the most important thing you can use for your skin to prevent damage and maintain your appearance. The earlier you start protecting your skin the better,” says Peter Bittar, a board-certified dermatologist at Miami Dermatology and Surgery.

Any SPF 30 or higher does the job. Plus you don’t need a complicated skincare routine and Dr. Bittar notes that a 10-step routine is overkill and generally unnecessary. This means skip exfoliating scrubs, layered acids, and anything heavily fragranced because they irritate more than they help and make it harder to stay consistent. If you feel like your skin needs something beyond the basics, a board-certified dermatologist can build a routine tailored specifically to you.
The Graduate’s Biggest Skin Stressor Is Low Sleep
Late nights and irregular schedules do real damage, inside and out. Research shows that first-year students are 15% more likely to experience significant academic decline when reporting poor sleep quality. Nearly all inflammatory-related skin issues such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, and more can be worsened by stress, so we often see graduates break out terribly in their first few months of college,” says Dr. Bittar. That means that lack of sleep is a huge stressor for the new graduate. Poor sleep also produces under-eye bags, slows wound healing, and worsens almost every skin condition. Build strong sleep habits whenever possible which may mean skipping out on parties if you are exhausted or taking naps before big test days or taking a warm shower to unwind. Going to bed with a clean face is one of the simplest things you can do so please remove your makeup no matter how tired you are. Once you come up with a skin care and sleep routine, it’s important to stick with it even during finals period. “It can take months to see the impact of any skin routine, and your skin may have its ups and downs before it responds. Consistency is key and patience is essential,” Dr. Bittar adds.
