If there’s one thing M&S bakery aisle frequenters (myself included) can’t seem to resist, it’s a Chunked N’ Loaded cookie. These oversized, all-butter bakes have become a regular source of supermarket excitement, with fans rushing to try every new flavour.
Now M&S is preparing to launch two more seasonally inspired varieties: the Chunked N’ Loaded Sticky Apple arrives on October 7, while the Chunked N’ Loaded Milk Chocolate, Malt & Caramel cookie will come just in time for Bonfire Night on November 4 – both for £2. If that’s not enough to tempt your tastebuds, there will also be a new five-pack of Milk Chocolate & Cornflake Cookies in store at the beginning of November.
The sticky apple cookie sounds like the perfect bake for this time of year, combining a soft, buttery cookie with candied apple pieces, crunchy caramel chunks and a white chocolate drizzle. Few things say autumn quite like apples and sticky toffee, a flavour which we’ve incorporated into so many seasonal recipes, from our chewy toffee apple cookies to sticky sponge cakes and puddings, so I have big hopes for this one.
The second new arrival leans into another flavour trend we’ve seen everywhere recently: malt. From the appearance of Milo – a popular Australian chocolate-flavoured malted powder – in everything from bakery pastries to café drinks to the recent M&S launches of Malteser-style snacks Pick ‘n’ Marks Belgian Milk Chocolate Malt Balls and Blond Chocolate Malt Balls, this nostalgic, comforting flavour is having a moment.
Both flavours are set to join the M&S in-store bakery counters, where the cookies are baked and finished for a more indulgent, coffee shop-style treat. So far the announcement is stirring up lots of excitement on social media, with commenters claiming the two new flavours sound simply too good to resist, despite their best intentions.
These new flavours have plenty to live up to. Over the past two years the range has already included playful combinations such as Pistachio & Lemon, Chocolate & Hazelnut, Salted Caramel & Pretzel and Raspberry Cheesecake.
One of my favourite recent flavours has to be the Custard Cream cookie, the latest in a line-up of M&S products inspired by this classic flavour, from doughnuts to a custard cream spread. It takes the classic biscuit’s vanilla flavour and packs it into an all-butter cookie with white chocolate buttons and pieces of M&S Custard Cream biscuit. It’s nostalgic but still feels like a proper bakery treat.
There’s also the more recent Chocolate and Cherry cookie, which channels Black Forest gâteau with dark chocolate and dried sour cherries. I like the sound of the tart fruit cutting through the richness, rather than making the whole thing overwhelmingly sweet.
And it’s not just M&S coming up with these creative seasonal cookie flavours. Co-op has also recently launched a limited-edition Toffee Popcorn cookie combining Belgian milk chocolate, salted caramel fudge and chewy popcorn pieces. It’s no wonder autumnal shopping is such as treat. I’ll certainly be making a beeline for the new sticky apple M&S cookies when they arrive on Wednesday.
