In a historic $42.8 million investment, Savannah State University announced a project to use these funds to make transformative campus facility improvements focused on student wellness, engagement and long-term student success, according to a press release.
“This historic investment reflects what is possible when leaders across the region and state come together with a shared commitment to student success and the future of higher education,” said President Jermaine Whirl. “We are sincerely grateful to the Chatham County Legislative Delegation for their strong advocacy and continued partnership, especially Senator Derek Mallow for helping lead this effort on behalf of Savannah State University. This historic investment strengthens not only Savannah State University, but the future workforce, economy, and vitality of the Savannah-Chatham region.”
Included in the plan is the construction of a new gym to replace the Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium, which was built in 1932 and has undergone no renovations since the 1960s.
Additional upgrades could include space for student support and engagement, student fitness and wellness, renovations to Tiger Arena and the dining area of the King Frazier Student Center.
