Both too little and too much weight gain during pregnancy are associated with serious maternal and child health outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight, death, preeclampsia, and unplanned cesarean delivery. Women in low- and middle-income countries often face challenges such as food insecurity, poor diet, limited health care access, and inadequate micronutrient supplements, all of which contribute to unhealthy weight during pregnancy. A review of pregnancy health promotion programs in low- and middle-income countries, led by Priscilla Aba Aggrey, found that nutrition, education, and physical activity interventions delivered early in pregnancy can help women achieve optimal gestational weight gain. Interventions delivered during pregnancy, especially when started early and tailored to local contexts, can reduce both inadequate and excessive gestational…

Chickasaw citizen Mike Carrillo is a walking commercial for his latest passion in life — persuading others who suffer with diabetes that they too can beat the debilitating disease by switching to a plant-based diet. Carrillo learned he had diabetes in 2003, and almost two decades later a related medical issue eventually led to a cure. It was 2020, the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I developed a fever and thought I had COVID,” Carrillo said. Tests came back negative. COVID was not the culprit. His illness was caused by an errant posterior hair that turned into a boil growing…

This project is a ground-level adaptive reuse intervention within Fairlie, one of Melbourne’s earliest and most architecturally significant high-rise residential buildings. Completed in 1961 by Yuncken Freeman Brothers, Griffiths & Simpson, Fairlie is heritage-listed and celebrated for its modernist expression, including prefabricated concrete frames, a non-loadbearing curtain wall system, and distinctive arched pilotis that create a floating base. Defined by minimalist principles and refined detailing, the building’s cultural significance required a sensitive and considered architectural approach.
